Indian Gaming Remains Strong Despite Online Casinos’ Influences

A recent Indian gaming report released has proven that brick and mortar casinos have not been greatly affected by the subsequent approval of online casino activities in different states all across the country. This is mainly because land based casino operations run by tribes are now enjoying recovery. According to the Casino City Press, the Casino City’s Indian Gaming Industry Report of 2013 showed an upward trend in gambling operations. This happens despite the fact that many states have already embraced casinos online legally.
Dr. Alan Meister authored the up to date and the most comprehensive study of Indian Gaming. The author is a Nathan Associates Inc., economist who specializes in conducting in depth research and analysis related to Indian gaming. The report covers the nationwide and state statistics, including the gaming and non gaming revenues, revenue sharing between the local and state governments, gaming machines and tables, number of facilities and tribes and Class II versus Class III gaming. It also tackles the qualitative projection on gaming, the economic contributions of the Indian gaming to the U.S. economy, differences and similarities in the other gambling segments along with the type and classes of gaming all across the states, the reasons behind the Indian gaming performance, trends and historical perspective and the state by state summaries.
The report reveals that Indian gaming has actually earned as much as 44 percent of allU.S.casino gaming revenues in 2011 alone. In addition, Indian gaming grew twice as fast as the rate of the commercial casino segment that was 1.7 percent in 2011. Only card rooms and racinos outperformed Indian gaming with 3.7 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively. There were about 339,000 jobs generated by Indian gaming facilities, including the non gaming operations and paid out more than $12.3 billion salaries to workers. It has also made payments of more than $1.4 billion to non tribal governments. All of these were achieved in the year 2011 when all the other online casino operations were struggling.
Furthermore, the report suggests that the top two states earn at an estimated rate of 38 percent of their gaming revenues from Indian gaming facilities. Meanwhile, the top five states got about 61 percent while the top ten generated 86 percent.  About 242 Native American Tribes operate more than 460 gaming facilities, 7,700 table games and 341,000 Indian gambling facilities all across the 28 states. The growth has been very impressive since the end of the Great Recession. The Indian gaming revenues soared by 3.4 percent that equates to a whopping $27.4 billion. The sluggish economy in 2011 seemed not to affect the tribe’s brick and mortar casinos while the casino online gaming industry was still battling for legalization at that time. This simply shows that Indian gaming remained unbeatable and such a great profit generator for every state they operate from.
According to Dr. Meister, the year 2011 was certainly a positive sign for the Indian gaming’s short to mid term projection in the future. However, there may be some differences in the performance across gaming facilities, states and tribes. This is because Indian gaming has been growing rapidly on a nationwide basis but varies per state. Its growth is inconsistent and not uniformly run everywhere. The growth was at 75 percent in the Indian gaming states while there was only 65 percent of the Indian gaming facilities. The report has not tackled the online casino in particular. Nevertheless, it represents the entire casino online industry.
The Casino City’s Indian Gaming Industry Report relies on the gaming industry and the related industries. Some information was taken from regulatory or government agencies as well as the investment communities. Dr. Meister and Nathan Associates were not commissioned to do the study. The report was produced as an independent scholarly research. However, the report released was more on Indian gaming’s 2011 performance. 2012 and 2013 may be more specific to the casino online industry considering the fact that many states have already legalized the activities. Further research into the effect that may have occurred on the industry will be more completely known as the other reports are released and further studies can be examined.
