Starting a blog can seem overwhelming, but in truth, it's one of the simplest ways to join the online community. Follow these tips to ensure your blog is positioned for success.
1. Define Your Goals
Before you start a new blog, it's essential that you define your goals for it. Your blog has a greater chance of success if you know from the beginning what you hope to accomplish with it. Are you trying to establish yourself as an expert in your field? Are you trying to promote your business? Are you simply blogging for fun and to share your ideas and opinions? Your short and long term goals for your blog are dependent on the reason why you're starting your blog. Think ahead to what you'd like to gain from your blog in six months, one year and three years. Then design, write and market your blog to meet those goals.Starting a blog can seem overwhelming, but in truth, it's one of the simplest ways to join the online community. Follow these tips to ensure your blog is positioned for success.
2. Know Your Audience
Your blog's design and content should reflect the expectations of your audience. For example, if your intended audience is teenagers, the design and content would be quite different than a blog targeted to corporate professionals. Your audience will have inherent expectations for your blog. Don't confuse them but rather meet and exceed those expectations to gain reader loyalty.
3. Be Consistent
Your blog is a brand. Just like popular brands such as Coke or Nike, your blog represents a specific message and image to your audience, which is your brand. Your blog's design and content should consistently communicate your blog's overall brand image and message. Being consistent allows you to meet your audience's expectations and create a secure place for them to visit again and again. That consistency will be rewarded with reader loyalty.
4. Be Persistent
A busy blog is a useful blog. Blogs that are not updated frequently are perceived by their audiences as static web pages. The usefulness of blogs comes from their timeliness. While it's important not to publish meaningless posts else you may bore your audience, it's essential that you update your blog frequently. The best way to keep readers coming back is to always have something new (and meaningful) for them to see.
5. Be Inviting
One of the most unique aspects of blogging is its social impact. Therefore, it's essential that your blog welcomes readers and invites them to join a two-way conversation. Ask your readers to leave comments by posing questions than respond to comments from your readers. Doing so will show your readers that you value them, and it will keep the conversation going. Continue the conversation by leaving comments on other blogs inviting new readers to visit your blog for more lively discussions. Your blog's success is partially dependent on your readers' loyalties to it. Make sure they understand how much you appreciate them by involving them and recognizing them through meaningful two-way conversation.
6. Be Visible
Much of your blog's success relies on your efforts outside your blog. Those efforts include finding like-minded bloggers and commenting on their blogs, participating in social bookmarking through sites such as Digg and StumbleUpon, and joining social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Blogging is not a demonstration of, "if you build it, they will come." Instead, developing a successful blog requires hard work by creating compelling content on your blog as well as working outside of your blog to promote it and develop a community around it.
7. Take Risks
Beginner bloggers are often afraid of the new blogging tools and features available to them. Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things on your blog. From adding a new plug-in to holding your first blog contest, it's important that you keep your blog fresh by implementing changes that will enhance your blog. Alternatively, don't fall prey to every new bell and whistle that becomes available for your blog. Instead, review each potential enhancement in terms of how it will help you reach your goals for your blog and how your audience will respond to it.
8. Ask for Help
Even the most experienced bloggers understand the blogosphere is an ever-changing place and no one knows everything there is to know about blogging. Most importantly, bloggers are part of a close-knit community, and the majority of bloggers understand that everyone is a beginner at some point. In fact, bloggers are some of the most approachable and helpful people you can find. Don't be afraid to reach out to fellow bloggers for help. Remember, the success of the blogosphere relies on networking, and most bloggers are always willing to expand their networks regardless of whether you're a beginner blogger or seasoned pro.
9. Keep Learning
It seems like everyday there are new tools available to bloggers. The Internet changes quickly, and the blogosphere is not an exception to that rule. As you develop your blog, take the time to research new tools and features, and keep an eye on the latest news from the blogosphere. You never know when a new tool will roll out that can make your life easier or enhance your readers' experiences on your blog.
10. Be Yourself
Remember, your blog is an extension of you and your brand, and your loyal readers will keep coming back to hear what you have to say. Inject your personality into your blog and adapt a consistent tone for your posts. Determine whether your blog and brand will be more effective with a corporate tone, a youthful tone or a snarky tone. Then stay consistent with that tone in all your blog communications. People don't read blogs simply to get the news. They could read a newspaper for news reports. Instead, people read blogs to get bloggers' opinions on the news, the world, life and more. Don't blog like a reporter. Blog like you're having a conversation with each of your readers. Blog from your heart.
If you want to become a better writer, get ready to do some work.
Because it won’t happen overnight, and not just because you want it to. You’re going to have to practice.
On this page, you’ll find some of my best tips, articles, and resources to help you get started as a writer — to get better not only at the craft of writing, but also at the art of communicating.
Why am I sharing this? Because I believe you have a story to tell — we all do — and the world needs to hear it. So let’s dig in.
So… you want to be a writer?
This all begins with believing you already are a writer. So let’s start there. My own journey of becoming a writer was an awakening of sorts — to who I already was. Maybe yours will be similar.
A writer is a writer when he says he is. —Steven Pressfield
Anyone who writes is a writer, but that doesn’t mean they’re a very good one. So let’s talk about how to become a better writer. We’ll begin with the basics — here are seven key lessons (with links to important articles about each):
Once you count the cost and make the decision to begin, it’s time to start writing.
Tips for when you begin
I’ve coached and trained other writers for years. I’ve built a powerful personal brand and platform and used it to publish my work. I’ve experimented and seen as much failure as success. Through all of it, I want to use what I’ve learned to help other people.
So my hope this blog serves you in your writing journey in some way. I’ve written hundreds of articles here, which is a lot to sort through. Here is a list of 10 essential tips on writing:
Although writers need to write first for the craft, it’s not a bad thing to want to get published. But that’s a byproduct, not a goal (For the real writer, anyway).
Look. This isn’t just something that happens accidentally. You have to work at it. So how do you create work that earns you the attention of publishers, exactly? You build a platform.
These days, a lot of writers use blogs and the power of the Internet to get their writing discovered. There’s no reason you can’t do the same. Here are 10 basic tips on blogging and building an audience that will help you get published:
In order to get noticed, you’ve got to be intentional.
We’ve all seen them. The same old, tired lists of regurgitated tips on how to blog better. They’re so common, you could probably name most of them in your sleep. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of them. I want to know what really works.
Since 2006, I’ve been a blogger and have helped thousands of people learn this craft of online publishing. Still, there are days when I feel very much like a newbie.

When I quit my old blog and started a new one, I realized how much I didn’t know about blogging. So I decided to put together my own list of tips — stuff I started doing recently that I should’ve been doing since the beginning.
So whether you’re just getting started or have been blogging for awhile, here are 25 tips to help guide and direct you:
General
No copy-catting. Stop trying to be like someone you admire and instead find out what unique offering you have.
Tell the truth. Never lie, mislead, or cajole. Trust is slowly earned and easily lost.
Be awesome. There’s enough mediocrity out there. Stop adding to the noise, and do something outstanding.
Give yourself grace. Be patient; it takes time to find your voice.
Pick a theme. But realize readers will stick around for your voice, not your subject.
Growth and community
Don’t measure stats too early. If you’re obsessing over daily numbers and you’re only a few months into your blogging journey, you’re wasting your time. It’s still too early to pay close attention to trends. After that, make sure you have Google Analytics installed.
Make your content easy to share. The majority of content that’s shared online is done through social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn, and others. You should make this easy for your readers to tell their friends about you. (A WordPress plugin I recommend is DIGG DIGG.)
Encourage community. Write unfinished posts, and ask your community to complete the conversation.
Never underestimate the importance of networking. If you’re not connecting regularly with readers and other bloggers, you’re missing out.
Guest post, guest post, guest post. (Enough said.)
Writing
Write timeless content. On the web, old content is perceived as irrelevant. Don’t write a newspaper; create a resource. (This is, incidentally, why I intentionally don’t put dates on my posts.)
Don’t write too little or too much. Generally, I try to write at least 300 words and no more than 1000 words. More than that, though, only write as many words as it takes and cut the rest.
Have a point. Don’t just word-vomit on your audience.
Write with conviction. Pick a side and be bold. And if you’re wrong, admit it.
Short sentences win.
Motivation and inspiration
Don’t give up. Bloggers who stick with it ultimately win.
Write as often as possible. Constantly capture ideas and turn them into posts. A tool that may help is Evernote.
Expect critics. A few people hating you is a sign you’re doing something right. Be prepared.
Find ways to regularly get inspired. This is the only way you can inspire others. When you’re empty, fill yourself up. Don’t neglect this.
Realize you can only create or react. At any give time, make sure you know which one you’re doing.
Miscellaneous
Write for scanners. We live in a busy, distracted world. Don’t demandattention; earn it.
Build an email list. If you ever want to sell or promote something, having people’s email addresses (and their permission to use them) is essential.
Invest in a good web design. Bad design can get in the way of good content.
Be generous. Give away more information, content, and ideas than you’re comfortable with. People will reward you. Link to others, but never let someone pay you to do so.
Watch what experts do. Not just what they say.
These are my 25 tips. You probably have 25 of your own. And that’s okay, because I’ve realized that everyone needs to approach blogging in their own way. That’s part of the fun. Feel free to add to this list in the comments.
Whether you like it or not, the Timeline format is coming to Facebook Pages, and you have until March 30th to figure it out.
If you’re lost and you don’t know what Timeline is or how it works, don’t worry –I’m here to break it down and make it easy for you to understand.
Why does any of this matter?
Because Facebook is stillhuge for online business, blogging and driving a ton of traffic.
It is consistently my #1 referring website (click here to see the last 90 days), and even through I wasn’t too keen on the changes at first, a lot of the new features for Pages really excite me.
Below you’ll find a number of videos, resources, snippets of codes and links, to help you work your way around Timeline.
I will continually add more videos, tips and tricks – so please bookmark this post for future reference.
Note: All of the videos have closed captioning enabled.
Please keep reading, and enjoy!
Getting Started
If you’re brand new to Timeline for Facebook Pages, the video below will walk you through the most important elements of Timeline that you need to understand before diving in.
Please note that all Facebook Pages will be converted to the new “TIMELINE” version of wordpress, which you may have seen on your friends’ personal profiles lately.
No comment on how they look, but there’s nothing we can do. On March 30th, all pages will be switched over.
p.s. it’s up to you, but I wouldn’t proceed with making a landing page on your site (i.e. read any further) because landing pages will be obsolete after the change.
There is yet another Facebook change around the corner, which is forcing me to create yet another Facebook landing page tutorial.
On March 11th (that’s tomorrow!) Facebook will no longer allow users to add new FBML applications to their Facebook page, which means the old way of creating a landing page (using the Static FBML application) will be extinct.
If you have an existing landing page using any FBML type application, don’t worry. Your existing page will not be affected. This change only affects those who do not have a landing page yet and want to create one after March 11th, 2011.
That said, even if you have a landing page setup for Facebook already, I recommend you check out how it’s done in the video below just in case Facebook changes their mind and decides to get rid of FBML all together, and because this new way of creating a landing page allows you to easily add HTML, so you can get pretty slick as far as what you can do and the things you can add onto your landing page.
I’m thinkin’ videos, opt-in forms, maps, and other dynamic things that were much harder to code in FBML before.
This is a good change, and even though this means a little extra work for me, I don’t mind as long as my work helps a few of you.
As a reminder, a landing page is a page that people who visit your Facebook Page will see first, which is important because you can then direct them to click on the ‘like button’ at the top, which isn’t so obvious if you just send people to your wall. Using a landing page can drastically increase your conversions and explode your Facebook fan count.
Below you’ll see a video explaining how to create an HTML / iFrame type landing page. The new application that I recommend, Static HTML iFrame Tab (by Jason Padvorac), allows you to add 2 landing pages: 1 for non-fans, and 1 for fans. Check out the video below to learn more about how you can utilize this application to increase “like” conversion and get the most bang for your buck.
There are other HTML / iFrame type applications available now too, but I like this one in particular because it’s free, easy to use and doesn’t ask for your email or any permissions like some of the other ones do.
Note: Facebook may be slow to load these new applications as they make the change from FBML to HTML. Please be patient when installing this application. Thanks!
As mentioned in the video, I’ll also be including some resources and HTML code that you can use on your own landing pages. I will continually be adding to the list of stuff below as I learn more and as my VA codes things that I can share with you.
Showing an Image
If you don’t know HTML and/or don’t have the resources to hire or find someone to code HTML or you, you can do what I did in the video and just simply create an image file that is the size of the Page (520 px wide and however tall you want it to be) and add your own copy, calls to action or pictures, etc. to that image.
Below is the sample HTML code I used to embed the image into the application:
Of course, replace the url in the example with the url of where your image is stored.
A Basic Link with Anchor Text
Here a basic code that you can copy that will create a link within your page:
<a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com">The Smart Passive Income Blog</a>
Be sure to replace the url between the quotations with your destination, and replace “The Smart Passive Income Blog” with whatever anchor text you want.
The ‘Like’ Button
You may want to add an image of the Like Button that Facebook uses within the graphics of your page. Simply right click on the like button below and “save as” to copy it onto your computer for your use.
Your Facebook Fan & Twitter Follower Counts
Here is a link (thanks to @adalpo_project for the find) to some html that you can use or tweak to show how many Facebook Fans and Twitter followers you have, which updates automatically for you.
If you’re using a service like Aweber to collect email addresses, you can simply add in the script that it gives you for your web form into the fields of the Static HTML application.
As I recommend in the video, I would reserve any sort of actions you want your user to takeother than clicking the LIKE button for your “Fan” landing page – the page people see after they click the ‘Like’ button. Again, the reasoning is that the primary purpose of the “Non-Fan” landing page is to get people to click on that ‘Like’ button. The more options you have the less likely that will happen. Again, it’s sort of like a squeeze page for Facebook.
More to come…
My own Facebook Page isn’t setup yet with the new HTML application, but I’m working with my VA now to code something cool and I’ll be sure to share that and anything else with you as I figure things out.
If you have something else to add, share or request please let me know and I’ll do my best to add it to the above resources.
And lastly, I’d really love it if you share this with your fans or followers today. All it takes is a simple click on the ‘like’ button below. Thanks!
Update: You can install up to 12 instances of this application so you can have more tabs than just the one for your landing page. Here is the link for that information.
